High quality Amazon product photography plays an important role on your listing page. It can help drive more visitors to your product and, as a result, improve your conversion rates when used effectively. Using appropriate Amazon guidelines sets you up for immediate success.
Amazon have strict policies when it comes to their image requirements. In order for your product to be accepted, you need to consider the technical aspects they ask for.
Here are 5 tips for the best Amazon practices to help with photography on your product listing.
1. Image File Requirements – The Technical
Your images should be at least 1000 x 1000px in size, however, Amazon recommends using 2000 x 2000px. Larger images ensure sharp focus even when the zoom option is applied in the gallery preview.
Your product should fill at least 85% of the frame and multiple angles should be included for showcasing purposes. Choose your photographs wisely to provide the client with an accurate product description and avoid any confusion.
The image file should be in one of the following formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF or TIFF. The maximum file size for each image is 10MB with a resolution no bigger than 72dpi.
Ensuring your images are square will prevent Amazon from adding white spaces to shorter sides by default. This will improve the overall presentation of your listing.
When saving your images, be aware that using special characters can prevent the images from being published. The file names should include the product’s identifier (ASIN, JAN, EAN, 13-digit ISBN or UPC), followed by a full stop and the file extension.
The above image requirements relate to all Amazon images in your listing. Once you nail these down, everything else gets easier.
2. The Overall Number Of Images
Amazon allows you to use up to 9 images to help sell your product. We recommend that the most important product images get uploaded first. This is because the 8th and 9th image tend to be hidden unless the customer expands the image gallery. One of these can also be a video, which is a powerful advertising tool and should be used when possible.
The images you use can be a combination of pack shots and lifestyle shots. We recommend using a maximum of 2 lifestyle shots.
3. Main Image – Amazon Product Photography Guidelines
Your main product image is the first image you see in the search. This one is definitely the most important image in your listing. Amazon strictly states that the main picture should be a professional product photography that accurately shows the entire item. The product should fill at least 85% of the frame. It also has to be taken against a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255).
For products such as books, music and video or DVD’s, the main picture should be the front cover. Here, the product should fill up over 90% of the image frame. In this case, it does not have to be a real life photo, art covers will also be accepted.
On the other hand, avoid using drawings or illustrations as a photo representation of your product. These aren’t accurate and can confuse the customer, which as a result could cause a bad reputation for your business.
The main image can’t contain any additional objects that could confuse the customer. Another thing to avoid are designs, such as watermarks across the pictures.
4. Secondary Image – Amazon Product Photography Requirements
Secondary images are additional pictures of your product that offer more information to your customers. Amazon product photography guides ask that these images are of high photographic quality and appropriately represent the product being sold.
We recommend you use secondary images to explain what your product is about. Using a variety of camera angles or showing different parts of the item will help customers understand your product.
You are allowed to use other objects, as long as they help with the demonstration of the goods. A good idea would be to include the packaging photo in one of these as an additional source of information. Another interesting thing would be to show the item on location and in use.
Test test test! Play around with angles, compositions and different setups to see what looks best. If you’re struggling with inspiration, research similar products on Amazon to see what looks good. However, if you want your photography to be perfect, we definitely advise opting out for a professional studio photographer. When investing in your own business, you need to be prepared to spend money in order to earn it.
5. Good Quality Amazon Infographics
Infographics allow you to combine images with text to show the benefits of your product.
They can highlight the weight, size and other relevant aspects that could impact your sales. Infographics are very helpful at providing customers with key features of the item much quicker than just text alone.
Amazon requirements can seem overwhelming at first, but they offer plenty of flexibility that you can use to your advantage. Staying within Amazon image guidelines still allows for creative touches in your product photography. Perhaps one of the best pieces of advice that we can give you is to think like a customer. Put yourself in their shoes and think about what questions they could have and how you could answer them through your images.
